| Ulfgar upon doing research and having his spectacles inspected knows the next thing he needs to find out is what the first book penned by their crafter was. He believes it was owned by a witch who lived out in the woods, and is putting together a team to go investigate.
GM: Shaalwyd Difficulty: 4E Time: 3pm GMT (10am EST) Character Starting: Ulfgar Gemcutter Dorf Wizard

| I feel much better about sending Moore out on a 4e than a 4a. You know Moore. Various and sundry knowledge skills, hard armor, big on the swift kicking, likes to suck your blood. Human Weaponsmith 3+. | |

| 'Regarding the Invae and their manifestations', excerpted from Worlds Beneath, Beside, and Beyond, by Trok Mind-Snare.There has been a great deal of hysteria surrounding the Invae of late, and it has fallen to me to educate and inform the masses as to the nature of these astral beings. I have spent a great deal of my time the last few weeks reading over old records from

and do not progress in this manner. We have seen that the Horrors written of by Kearos Navarim and the scholars of Nehr’esham are different from them in form, actions and motivations. The Invae are then understood to be true Spirits, as the spirits of nature and the elements are known to exist. They are subject to the same rules and conventions understood by Nethermancers across the kingdom, though they are often much more cunning and difficult to control than more pedestrian spirits. Why these spirits manifest themselves as insects, and why they bear such ill will towards our races is not known. Either they are simply trying to breed and grow and exist, as a true race, or

and integrate them into the Hive, making them a physical and mental part of the hive structure. The Invae capture their victims for three purposes: possession, procreation, and summoning. Possession is their most devious function, as the possessed is robbed of all their faculties, while the spirit is placed in full control of the host. They often tempt the ignorant into allowing themselves to be possessed by claiming a “union” of sorts, and convincing the victim of the benefits to be had from such an event. Upon successfully possessing the victim, they also come into possession of their thoughts and memories, allowing them to perfectly imitate the host, even fooling close friends and acquaintances. They will then seduce more victims into giving themselves up, and thus spread the infestation. Members of the Temples of Chorrolis can account for much of the odd behavior on the part of their elders to this type of activity.
The second use for captives is procreation, actively creating new hosts for the Invae to possess. Breeders seem to be fanatically loyal to their captors; whether this loyalty led them to become breeders or was inculcated afterwards is unknown.
Lastly, they use captives in their hives for summoning, although this is a rare use, as summoning a Queen Invae is a major event for them, and marks the final stage of growth for the hive. When enough Invae have possessed Name-givers, they will gather together to summon a Queen. The Queen is simply a very powerful spirit, with abilities not seen in lower level forms, including the ability to summon and make manifest true-form Invae, who appear as much larger specimens of their

and as always, the help of an Illusionist to determine the “true” form of any suspicious Name-givers can be helpful. The last and probably least effective method is through astral viewing. Astrally, the possessed seem to be identical to their original forms, and only close and careful examination of the subjects Pattern will show signs of infestation.
It is important to keep in mind that the Invae are not nearly the threat they are made out to be, once a firm and practiced understanding of their ways has been established. It would be foolish to simply start killing anyone accused of being possessed, although many may use this time to further their own agendas. Let us

| The message stone:
It is with great shame that I record this message, in hopes that those who come after me may learn from my mistakes. My name is Ilka, and I spent my life looking for ways to shield this world from the Horrors that claw at the boundary between the astral and the material. I am – I was - a Nethermancer.
Summoning a spirit is like holding a handful of fresh meat at the opening of a burrow, and hoping what emerges to eat it is a fox, not a stinger. Without a Name to call, any spirit can answer. Thus, the restricted pattern of the Spell Matrix. If I can force the spirit that answers my call to behave like a Cruel Physician, does it matter whether the spirit is truly an ally or an invae?
So I thought. And yet I learned, to my cost, that when I summon a spirit – when my magic connects with its pattern – I feed power into the pattern. Hungry spirits hover near the matrixes that allow them to squeeze into the world, chained though they may be; eager to answer the call. I thought it was my strength, my power. I believed my prowess as a Nethermancer was wholly responsible for my growing facility with certain spells. I believed my will leashed the spirit I summoned, and I Named it to bind it further to me. I took my beast for walks, and thought that because I held the leash, I controlled it. I did not dream it would turn on me. | |
