Clarification from the official errata document:
Water spear costs a Recovery test and is a Recovery test. However, it does not benefit from any effects that improve Recovery tests (e.g. booster potions or the Heat Food spell). Discipline abilities that allow Karma to be spent on a Recovery test can be used.
