Whenever an legendary success (6+) is rolled during a dramatically tense moment (fighting a great beast, facing down the enemy bossman, diplomacy between great powers) a character should immediately convert one item on their character sheet into a Pattern Item. By preference these items will have something to do with the test being made, such as boots for Avoid Blow, weapons or bracers for attacks, or items of decoration for social encounters. If the most logical point is already a pattern item, upgrade the pattern item one level.  

Spellcasters may assume that their grimoires are already minor pattern items representing the magical schooling they engaged in before character creation, and continue from day to day.
